Edinburgh Small Micro Wedding Photographer

Solen for your Intimate Micro-wedding: The Natural Choice for Small Weddings in Edinburgh…

And I don’t mean just cos I’m five foot one…I’m also a big fan of small celebrations. As an Edinburgh wedding photographer, I’ve always been especially drawn to smaller scale weddings and intimate celebrations. These kinds of days tend to feel relaxed, personal and deeply meaningful but still with space for genuine connection rather than rigid timelines or traditions.

Over more than twelve years photographing weddings and elopements across Scotland, I’ve found that smaller celebrations often allow couples to create something truly their own. That might be a ceremony with a handful of guests in one of Edinburgh’s hidden gardens, a city elopement followed by dinner at an independent restaurant, or a quiet coastal gathering just outside the city.

My photography style naturally suits these kinds of weddings. I work in a documentary-led way, blending 35mm and medium format film with digital photography to capture the atmosphere and emotion of the day as it unfolds. Film photography adds a softness, a bit of creative play and a timeless quality that works beautifully with intimate celebrations, while digital allows flexibility for spontaneous moments.

Many couples who choose to work with me are slightly awkward creatives, none too keen on being centre of attention and a little camera shy. My aim isn’t to turn your wedding into a photoshoot, but to create a relaxed environment where you can simply be present with the people you love and each other.

Because smaller weddings often have a different relaxed rhythm to larger celebrations, I also offer flexible photography packages designed with that intimacy in mind. Couples can choose half-day or hourly coverage, depending on what feels right for their plans. There are also options with or without 35mm and medium format film, allowing you to tailor the experience and aesthetic to your celebration.

Edinburgh is an incredible place for small weddings, from historic closes and hidden gardens to creative venues and nearby coastal landscapes.

If you’re planning a small wedding or elopement in Edinburgh or East Lothian and want relaxed, artistic photography that blends documentary storytelling with analogue film, I’d love to hear about your ideas.

Frequently Asked Questions About Small Wedding Photography in Edinburgh

Do you offer photography packages for small weddings in Edinburgh?

Yes, I offer flexible photography packages designed specifically for small weddings and elopements. Many couples choose half-day coverage (4.5hrs) or an hourly photography rate (usually for when 3hrs feels more suitable), which allows you to document the key moments of your day without committing to a full traditional wedding package.

Can we include film photography in our small wedding photography coverage?

Absolutely. Alongside digital photography, I offer 35mm and medium format film photography as part of many weddings and elopements. Film adds a soft, timeless quality that works beautifully for intimate celebrations. Some couples choose a mix of film and digital, while others prefer digital-only coverage depending on their plans and aesthetic.

How do you approach photographing small weddings?

My approach is documentary-led, candid and relaxed. Rather than staging lots of poses, I focus on photographing real moments as they naturally unfold - the conversations, laughter, quiet in-between moments and the atmosphere of the day. This works especially well for camera-shy couples and intimate weddings, where authenticity matters more than perfection. I try to be as unobtrusive as possible to get lots of candids as folks feel more relaxed and always look more themselves.

How far in advance should we book a small wedding photographer in Edinburgh?

Many couples book 6–12 months in advance, especially for popular weekends in spring and summer. However, smaller weddings and elopements often come together more quickly, so it’s always worth getting in touch even if your plans are fairly last minute.

Midweek weddings are always a winner, and often you’ll find more availability for any wedding industry folks you wish to work with as the weekends are still more common.

Do you help with planning or location ideas?

Yes, after more than a decade photographing weddings and elopements across Scotland, I’m happy to share suggestions for intimate venues, hidden Edinburgh locations and independent suppliers. Many couples appreciate having local insight and permission to do a wedding that doesn’t feel too ‘weddingy’, when planning a smaller celebration in the city. Have a look at The Elopement Society pages (but ssshhh cos it’s a secret) where I detail how I can help couples to design their small-scale local wedding celebrations as well as photograph.
