The Joy of Working with Return Brand Photography Clients : Mairi MacSween Designs

Building an Authentic Visual World Through Ongoing Brand Photography

I work with so many clients who absolutely hate being in front of the camera, it makes them deeply uncomfortable and yet it is a necessary evil of the ways we have to communicate and market the work we do. For many independent creatives, the challenge is not just getting photographs taken once — it’s building a consistent visual language that can evolve alongside the work itself. I’m awful at this for myself for sure.

This recent series of brand photography sessions with Mairi Macsween is a good example of how smaller, more flexible shoots can create an expansive image library over time.

My lovely neighbour, based within the same Leith studio community, Mairi’s work blends illustration, wedding stationery design and contemporary art practice, with visuals rooted in texture, colour, and thoughtful detail. Across two separate sessions, the focus was less on creating polished “content” and more on documenting the atmosphere of her creative world in a way that felt honest, tactile and recognisably hers. There’s certain colours within the work that she makes and the studio space she works in that we’ve referenced to echo her branding and website alongside the freshness of her illustrative work.

The resulting galleries combined:

  • candid portraits

  • behind-the-scenes studio imagery

  • editorial workspace details

  • abstract textures and objects of inspiration

  • flat lay imagery of wedding stationery collections

  • relaxed promotional portraits

  • process-led storytelling moments

Together, these elements create a more layered and versatile visual archive — imagery that can be used across websites, press features, social platforms, launches, newsletters, and future creative opportunities.

In these sessions we can show the tools of your creative process, examples of inspiration and how you gather this and build up to making your products or putting together your services. We can lean into finding ways to show why your brand colours fit with your work, we can show elements of the process of working with you and for creatives who don’t bring clients into their workspace, we can focus on editorial images of your products or lots of candids and portraits that express elements of the themes of your current work projects. They’re designed to be a versatile session of gathering visual imagery that an story tell for and build a bit of lore, create a feeling or bring us into the creative world you’ve built.

Why Ongoing Brand Photography Matters for Creative Businesses

One-off brand shoots can be valuable, but for many founders, artists, writers, performers and makers, visual consistency becomes increasingly important over time. And the goalposts are forever changing in the spaces where we do market our wares to the world, so having some consistency in the visual language of your photos can be something to lean into when you get a bit lost with yet another change in the algorithms and search functionality of these spaces.

Whether you are:

  • launching new work - record releases, solo/group exhibitions, print release, a new group experience or inititiative

  • promoting products - a line release, a rebrand, a new venture

  • announcing events - PR and invite events, performances and gigs, pop-ups

  • sharing process - building trust and collaborative opportunities, delving a bit deeper into sharing your work

  • pitching yourself professionally - to publications, with new services or retreats, third sector campaigns

  • updating your website - brand refresh or a move from platforms you don’t own

  • growing an audience online - brand voice, consistency, a broader look at what you do

having a steady flow of authentic, aligned imagery makes it much easier to communicate your work clearly and consistently. This is particularly true for creative businesses where personality, atmosphere and process form part of the brand itself and I think that is relevant for all the most authentic brands, especially for those who can’t stand thinking of themselves as a brand at all.

The 90 Minute Founder Session

The imagery featured throughout this gallery was created through the 90 minute Founder Session — a flexible brand photography offering designed for independent creatives and small businesses needing imagery that moves beyond simple portraits.

These sessions are intentionally versatile and can include a mix of:

  • founder headshots

  • studio or workspace imagery

  • editorial product photography

  • behind-the-scenes moments

  • flat lays of products, tools of your trade or inspiration you keep

  • abstract detail imagery

  • process documentation

  • more candid promotional portraits

  • social media content

Sessions can take place across up to two locations and are designed to create a visual library with enough variety to support multiple platforms and future launches.

For many clients, this becomes less about creating “content” and more about building a recognisable visual world around their work.
