Art

I’m not usually a fan of traditions, except the ones we build for ourselves. I’ve a deep distrust of prescribed fun so it’s partly my innate contrariness but I have over the last 3 years given myself a creative challenge at the start of the new year. It’s not a resolution, ok.

Firstly, I made a self portrait from my red room series to discuss my experiences of living with Poland Syndrome, the following year I made a little flipbook machine of me dancing cos I was desperate to stop feeling self conscious sober dancing at gigs (worked a treat) and this year I started back in the darkroom on a series of 35mm black and white nude self portraits, exploring my autonomy and getting back into the meditative processes of printing.

Here’s the fruits of that surreal journey so far. And yeah, I should really dust and sweep up before I make these but it’s not likely…

Funny how it’s easy to appreciate all the scratches, dust and imperfections on a negative or print but not so easy to love your own flesh and scars. Indoctrinated from childhood to pick at flaws in our bodies even though they’re magic.
