Red Room is an ongoing self-portraiture project combining colour digital self portraiture, black-and-white 35mm photography, poetry, video, installation works and layered risograph prints.
I am showing a work from this series at The House of Smalls at I Am and I Be.
Bringing together self-taken nude photographs, fragments of poetry printed on tracing paper and a wall of A3 neon-pink and red risograph posters, the work explores autonomy, intimacy, memory and the process of reclaiming one's own image and sense of self.
First developed through an intimate, analogue process of photographing, writing, developing and printing, Untitled brings private experiences into a shared space. Its layered installation draws on the visual language of gig posters and music ephemera - parasocial relationships, online stalking and the need to promote self employment via social media, setting the personal against the public. The 35mm self taken nudes and poetry exploring the body as lived experience against the body as image - regaining autonomy after abusive relationships, coercive control v sexual desire and self image after sexual violence and medical trauma.
I’m pleased to be exhibiting the work in full for the fourth time as part of I Am and I Be, the fourth annual exhibition at The House of Smalls. Encompassing the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the exhibition brings together artwork and film by women using art to reclaim themselves, their experiences and their lives.
